Devonport High School for Girls

National Citizen Service Champion School

We are proud to receive National Citizen Service Champion School award.

Devonport High School for Girls is proud to have received National Citizen Service (NCS) Champion School status for 2015–16.  The award comes from the government’s NCS Trust, which includes David Cameron and Theresa May, in recognition of our support for the scheme and the number of our students that seized the once in a lifetime opportunity on offer.  A total of 35 Year 11 and 12 students successfully completed the NCS programme, which involves two weeks of residential adventure challenges, followed by a week planning a Social Action Project in the local community.  The culmination of the programme is to volunteer 30 hours to carry out the Social Action Project, all of which develops employability skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, organisation and resilience.

The award was presented by Dwain Morgan, the Social Inclusion Manager at Argyle Community Trust, who run the NCS programme in Plymouth.  Dwain also spoke to the current Year 11 students to encourage them to participate this summer, with seventeen students already signed up.

The NCS is a great way to develop skills to show what our students can do in addition to their academic achievements, whilst meeting new friends and making a positive contribution to the community.  We look forward to continuing our support of Argyle Community Trust to offer the National Citizen Service to all of our students.
